Molybdenum behavior during early diagenesis: Insights from Mo isotopes

چکیده
[1] We present molybdenum isotope and concentration data from 14 sites in the eastern Pacific from the central California to the Peru margin. The environments studied have been chosen to represent a broad range in oxidation-reduction (redox) potential, which provide a framework for the behavior of this redoxsensitive element. Manganese-rich hemipelagic sediments from the eastern tropical Pacific have a mean characteristic Mo isotope signature (dMo = 0.49 ± 0.04%, two times the standard deviation of the mean (2 SDOM) with n = 14) that reflects fractionation between ocean water and authigenic Mo associated with Mn oxides. Authigenic Fe-Mo-S deposits from reducing continental margin settings also have a characteristic Mo isotopic signature (dMo = 1.64 ± 0.04%, 2 SDOM with n = 136). Both of these values are in contrast to highly sulfidic (>11 mM H2Saq) restricted basin environments, which contain Mo isotope values analytically indistinguishable from seawater. In terms of the Mo isotope composition, the modern oceanic Mo sink is dominated by continental margin ‘‘type’’ environments where dMo = 1.6% and Mn-rich sediments where dMo = approximately 0.5%, with a minor contribution from euxinic settings where H2Saq > 11 mM.

Oceanic molybdenum isotope fractionation: Diagenesis and hydrothermal ridgeâ•’flank alteration
[1] Isotopic analyses of dissolved molybdenum are presented for sediment pore waters from a reducing sedimentary basin and for fluids from a low-temperature ridge flank hydrothermal system. dMo in these fluids range from 0.8 to 3.5% (relative to a laboratory standard), demonstrating that marine sedimentary reactions significantly fractionate Mo isotopes. Within the upper 3 cm of sediment, manga...

The source of cement in oilfields is critical to the prediction of the distribution of cements in the reservoirs and also prediction of reservoir quality. The source of mineral forming cements has been determined for the Storrington oolitic carbonate reservoir (Middle Jurassic Great Oolite Formation, Weald Basin, onshore UK) using a combination of petrography, electron microscopy, fluid inclusi...

متن کامل7 . 10 . 6 . Mo and U Geochemistry and Isotopes
The molybdenum and uranium isotopic systems can potentially be used to reconstruct the oxidation state of an ancient the global ocean as recorded in the FAR-DEEP samples. As previous studies have shown (e.g. Anbar et al. 2007; Kendall et al. 2010), the use of multiple proxies can help lift uncertainties and avoid the pitfalls associated with the use of a single redox proxy. Molybdenum is the mo...
متن کاملMolybdenum isotope fractionation by cyanobacterial assimilation during nitrate utilization and N2fixation
We measured the δ⁹⁸Mo of cells and media from molybdenum (Mo) assimilation experiments with the freshwater cyanobacterium Anabaena variabilis, grown with nitrate as a nitrogen (N) source or fixing atmospheric N₂. This organism uses a Mo-based nitrate reductase during nitrate utilization and a Mo-based dinitrogenase during N₂ fixation under culture conditions here. We also demonstrate that it ha...
